Fire Extinguisher Safety

Fire extinguishers are a crucial part of creating a safe home. 80% of fatal fires occur in the home, and while we often think that it can’t happen to us time and time again fire strikes people who thought the exact same way. Purchasing an extinguisher is important, but just as important is placement and maintenance. Here are some tips to help you purchase, place, and maintain your extinguisher.

      1. Pick the right class of extinguisher for the job. In a kitchen where burning grease is probable consider purchasing a class K extinguisher, however in your garage where there could be numerous types of products burning an ABC extinguisher would be more appropriate.

      2. Place your extinguisher on the wall somewhere that is easy to get to, and that is not surrounded by combustible materials.

      3. Make sure that your extinguisher is up to date, and charged.

      4. Check all the external hardware especially the hoses to ensure that they are in good working order, if you find anything out of the ordinary take your extinguisher to get serviced.

      5. On powder based extinguishers at least twice a year turn it upside down and tap the bottom to ensure that the powder is not caked to the bottom.

      6. When placing extinguishers we recommend placing one near the door, and another near the garage door on the opposite side of the garage to ensure no matter where you are you can access an extinguisher in an emergency.
