Fire Safety

Fire safety is paramount in the world we live in, 80% of fatal fires in the United States originate in the home. That said here are some simple tips that you can follow to reduce your risk.

  1. Mount at least one fire extinguisher in a handy place in case something does happen. We recommend placing one by the door and one near the garage door. Once you’ve mounted your extinguishers ensure that they are in good working order. If you need tips on fire extinguisher placement and maintenance check out our article of fire extinguishers.

  2. Install working smoke alarms in your home and garage, so that you will have enough time to evacuate your home should fire strike your home.

  3. Practice evacuation drills, have a plan, ensure that everyone knows the plan and where to meet once outside. Exit Drills In The Home (EDITH) are very important to practice before disaster strikes and emotions are running high.

  4. Try not to store large volumes of gasoline and other solvents in your garage, accumulation of vapors can cause catastrophic fires when they find heat sources.

  5. Don’t allow combustible clutter to accumulate in your garage. Toss out those old newspapers, and used solvent rags as they become fuel stockpiles in a fire.

  6. Used solvent rags can spontaneously combust and should not be allowed to accumulate in close proximity to each other. Should you find yourself frequently using solvents consider purchasing a special metal solvent trash can that will contain a solvent rag fire should one start.
