Lighting Safety

A dark garage is an unsafe garage. It’s estimated that 75% of falls occur in the home and 50% of accidental deaths are a result of falls. Having proper lighting in your garage is crucial to avoiding serious injury. Poor lighting not only increases the possibility of falls, but can lead to any number of injuries when one factors in the use of power tools in the garage. Here are some safety tips to help you reduce the risk of serious injury in your garage.

      1. Ensure that you are using the maximum safe wattage in all light fixtures in your garage. (Max wattage is often posted inside the light fixture itself.)

      2. Consider installing more lighting fixtures if you feel that it’s hard to see in your garage, often times garages are not built with adequate lighting to save money by the builder.

      3. Never use light fixtures that use naked bulbs. Bulbs need to be shielded against breaking, and also to reduce the fire danger in your garage.

      4. Consider LED bulbs, not only will they help you save money but they last longer, and shine brighter.

      5. Make sure any steps are well lit to help reduce the risk of falls.
